Trail Description
One of the most interesting places that we came across in the New England Area was Purgatory Chasm State Reservation in Sutton, Massachusetts. The chasm runs a "quarter of a mile and has granite walls running as large as 70 feet" (DCR). The Chasm loop trail begins in the chasm and loops around the back, meeting up with Charley's Loop trail. Old Purgatory trail is located further down the entrance road. Along the trails one can see rock formations " with names as The Corn Crib, The Coffin, The Pulpit, Lovers' Leap and Fat Man's Misery" (DCR). The origin of the large rock chasm dates back to when the glaciers melted causing the sudden release of dammed up water which cut through the rocks. It has been visited by many historians including Peter Whitney author of Worcester County: America's First Frontier. In 1919 the chasm was designated a state reservation. Along with the adventure of chasm and walking the trails, there is a covered gazebo with many picnic tables as well as grill sites with tables and fire pits. Easy to find off of highway 95, Purgatory Chasm is only a 40 minute drive from Providence.
